Plan the points that remain.

List graded work, set a target percentage, and see how a final exam could change the course result.

This is a points-based estimate. For category-weighted syllabi, convert each category to equivalent points or check the category rules separately.

About this calculator

Method, formulas, and limits.

What this does

Calculates a current percentage from assignment points, maps it to a letter grade, and estimates the final-exam score needed for a target course grade.

Who it is for

Students checking assignment totals, planning a final exam, comparing grade scenarios, or deciding how much a remaining assessment can change the course result.

How it works

The current percentage is total points earned divided by total points possible. If a final-exam weight is supplied, the calculator solves the weighted-average equation for the score needed to reach the target.

Limitations

This points-based model does not include category weights, dropped assignments, extra credit, late penalties, or institution-specific rounding unless you represent them in the inputs.

Key calculations

Current percentage
current = total points earned / total points possible × 100
Weighted course grade
course grade = current × (1 − final weight) + final score × final weight
Required final score
required final = (target − current × (1 − final weight)) / final weight

Reference ranges

A
90–100% under the standard letter-grade thresholds used by this calculator.
B
80–89.99% under the standard letter-grade thresholds used by this calculator.
C
70–79.99% under the standard letter-grade thresholds used by this calculator.
D / F
60–69.99% is D and below 60% is F. Schools may use different cutoffs.

How to use it

  1. 1.List graded workAdd each assignment, quiz, project, or test with points earned and points possible.
  2. 2.Set the targetEnter the course percentage you want to finish with, such as 90 for an A.
  3. 3.Set final weightEnter how much the remaining final exam contributes to the course grade.
  4. 4.Review the scenarioRead the current grade, required final score, and optional projected grade.

The calculator adds all points earned, adds all points possible, and divides earned points by possible points. This is a points-based model.

Enter your target percentage and final-exam weight. The calculator solves for the final score required to reach that target.

That means the target is not reachable under the entered points and final-exam weight, even with a perfect final exam.

Not directly. You can first convert category results into equivalent points, or use the calculator as a points-based estimate and check your syllabus rules separately.
