About this calculator

Method, formulas, and limits.

What this does

Computes your exact Ohio take-home pay by processing federal taxes, Ohio's graduated state income tax brackets, local School District Income Tax (SDIT), and FICA. It factors in your Ohio IT 4 exemptions and handles common pre-tax deductions to generate a highly accurate paycheck stub for 2025 and 2026.

Who it is for

Employees in Ohio navigating the state's complex mix of state and local taxes. It's built for salaried professionals comparing job offers, hourly workers calculating overtime in manufacturing or retail, and anyone needing to estimate the impact of a specific Ohio School District Income Tax on their monthly budget.

How it works

The tool first annualizes your gross income. It then runs your taxable wages through Ohio's progressive tax brackets (which vary by year) after applying your personal exemptions. If you input a School District Tax rate, it calculates that local liability. Finally, it deducts federal taxes via IRS tables and FICA before yielding your net pay.

Limitations

Ohio has a highly localized tax system. While this tool perfectly models state and school district taxes, it does not automatically calculate city/municipal income taxes (like those collected by RITA or CCA), which range from 1% to 3%. You must factor in your specific city's tax separately.

Key calculations

Gross Pay
Calculate gross earnings for the period based on salary or hourly wages. grossPay = salary / payPeriods for salary workers, or (regularHours × rate) + (overtimeHours × rate × multiplier) for hourly workers.
Ohio State Withholding
Annualize wages, apply the graduated bracket formula for the selected year, subtract exemptions. ohioWithholding = max(0, brackets(annualizedWages, year) − exemptionCredit)
School District Tax
Apply the optional school district rate to the same annualized taxable base used for Ohio withholding. sdTax = taxableWages × (sdRate / 100)
Net Pay
Subtract all taxes and deductions from gross pay. netPay = grossPay − federalWithholding − ohioWithholding − sdTax − socialSecurity − medicare − preTaxDeductions

Reference ranges

Federal Withholding
Federal income tax ranges from 10% to 37% of taxable wages depending on your income level and filing status.
Ohio Graduated Brackets
Ohio uses a progressive bracket system (from 0% up to 3.99% for 2025). The top marginal rates have been steadily reduced by recent state legislation.
School District Income Tax
Not all Ohioans pay this, but for those who do, School District Income Tax (SDIT) typically ranges between 0.5% and 2.0% of your taxable income.

How to use it

  1. 1.Select Calculation ModeUse simple mode for quick salary checks. Switch to advanced mode if you need to calculate hourly overtime, factor in Ohio school district taxes, or model bonus payouts.
  2. 2.Input Ohio Gross WagesProvide your annual salary or hourly rate. For hourly workers, input regular hours and any overtime expected in the pay period.
  3. 3.Enter Ohio IT-4 DetailsChoose your federal filing status and input your Ohio exemptions (from your IT-4 form). These exemptions directly reduce the income subject to Ohio's graduated brackets.
  4. 4.Add School District Tax (SDIT)If you live in a taxing school district, enter your specific rate (usually 0.5% to 2.0%). You can also add pre-tax deductions like 401(k) or health insurance here.
  5. 5.Pick the Tax YearSelect 2025 or 2026. Ohio frequently updates its state income tax brackets, so choosing the correct year is critical for accuracy.
  6. 6.Review the Ohio Pay StubAnalyze the breakdown, paying special attention to the split between federal tax, Ohio state tax, and your local school district tax.

It uses year-based federal IRS tables, Ohio withholding formulas with the correct bracket rates for 2025 and 2026, and a manual school district rate you provide. It is still an estimate because payroll providers may use employer-specific settings, local municipal tax handling, YTD adjustments, and benefit timing that this tool cannot see.

Ohio withholding uses the selected year's graduated bracket formula with the exemption count you enter. The calculator annualizes your wages, applies the bracket rates, subtracts the exemption credit, and divides the result back into a per-period withholding amount. Additional withholding is added on top unless the Ohio exempt toggle is turned on.

School district tax is an optional input in this calculator. When enabled, you enter your local school district's income tax rate (check your local tax forms for the correct rate). The calculator applies it to the same annualized wage base used by the Ohio state withholding calculation.

Yes. Hourly workers can enter regular hours, overtime hours, and an overtime pay multiplier (typically 1.5x). The calculator computes gross pay including overtime and runs it through the full tax and deduction pipeline for an accurate net pay estimate.

Those terms refer to specific payroll provider systems or regional search queries, not separate calculator modes. This page gives a generic Ohio estimate using state and federal formulas rather than mirroring a specific payroll provider's proprietary calculations.

Yes. Bonus pay can be added in the same paycheck estimate so you can compare a normal period against one that includes a bonus. Bonuses affect withholding calculations, and the advanced mode offers flat supplemental or aggregate federal methods.

Ohio uses graduated brackets. For 2025, rates range from 0% on the first $26,050 of taxable income up to 3.99% on income above $130,250 (adjusted annually). The calculator applies the correct bracket schedule based on the tax year you select.
