About this calculator
Method, formulas, and limits. What this does
Estimates take-home pay by applying the structured 2026 federal withholding, FICA, and state withholding schedules for Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, and Virginia.
Who it is for
Employees, freelancers, and HR teams who need a planning breakdown of gross pay, federal and state withholding, FICA, pre-tax benefits, and estimated net pay for salary or hourly work.
How it works
Enter salary or hourly pay, pay frequency, filing status, supported state, and deductions. The calculator maps those inputs to the 2026 structured withholding engine, subtracts FICA and pre-tax benefits, and shows a per-paycheck and annualized estimate.
Limitations
Estimates only — the current UI models Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, and Virginia with 2026 schedules. Actual withholding depends on your employer's payroll system, W-4/state forms, YTD wages, local taxes, bonuses, overtime, and benefit costs; those inputs are not fully represented here.
Key calculations
- Gross Pay
- For this simple UI, salary gross pay is annual salary ÷ pay periods; hourly gross pay is hourly rate × weekly hours annualized to the selected pay frequency.
- Federal Withholding
- Apply IRS percentage-method tables for the tax year, filing status, and pay frequency on taxable wages.
- State Withholding
- State-specific rules (flat rate, brackets, allowances) applied to taxable wages after the state standard deduction.
- FICA
- Social Security 6.2% up to the wage cap plus Medicare 1.45% (2.35% above the threshold).
- Net Pay
- netPay = grossPay − federalWithholding − stateWithholding − fica − preTaxDeductions − postTaxDeductions
Reference ranges
- Federal & FICA
- Federal withholding follows IRS percentage-method tables. FICA = 6.2% Social Security + 1.45% Medicare (2.35% additional above the threshold).
- State Rates
- The public form currently exposes Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, and Virginia. Their rates and deductions come from the 2026 structured configuration; local city and county taxes are not included in the simple form.
- Pay Frequencies
- Weekly = 52 periods/year, biweekly = 26, semimonthly = 24, monthly = 12. Choose the one that matches your schedule.
How to use it
- 1.Enter your payChoose salary or hourly, enter the amount, pay frequency, and hours per week if hourly.
- 2.Select your statePick Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, or Virginia to use the structured tax-year withholding rules.
- 3.Set filing statusChoose single or married filing jointly and enter dependents for the dependent credit.

- 5.Review the resultsRead net pay per period, taxes, deductions, and the annualized comparison.
Take-home pay is gross pay minus federal withholding, state withholding, FICA (Social Security and Medicare), and any pre-tax or post-tax deductions you entered.
Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, and Virginia using the current 2026 structured withholding schedules.
It uses the project's structured 2026 tax-year schedules for the four exposed states, but your actual paycheck can differ because of employer payroll rules, W-4 details, YTD wage caps, local taxes, and benefit costs.
